Bailey’s Story
Flowing with Art:
When I flow in art, it’s because I have a goal in mind. It’s fun to draw aimlessly, but I’ve found that doesn’t suck me into the process. Flow arises once I’ve thumbnailed ideas for drawings I want to produce. It also helps that I know the process—first a thumbnail, then a sketch, followed by line art and color/light, and finally details and background. Instead of deliberating over what to do next, I’ve already subconsciously moved on to the next step, dividing the process into manageable steps. Drawing is also something I do often, so the act of drawing lines and making an appealing color scheme is something I’m competent at doing. However, I’m constantly pushing myself to produce a better image, one that reflects the one in my head. It also helps that I can problem-solve on the spot, with no delay. If I’ve placed a faulty line or added an unfitting background, I immediately know, and can undo it and try again with new colors/lines. Before I know it, the drawing is done. This flow process is so immersive, I sometimes completely lose track of time. People often say time flies when you’re having fun, but from my experience, time really flies when I flow.
