Living Wholeheartedly
“Being whole is about being open and accommodating of all parts of your personality: the light and dark passengers, the strengths and weaknesses, the successes and failures.”
Many people believe that happiness, well-being, and flourishing come from avoiding negativity and discomfort. It’s easy to find products and slogans promoting “positive vibes only.” However, as we’ve discussed, the pursuit of constant happiness and positive emotions is unrealistic and can even make us unhappier.
Research shows that true flourishing occurs when we embrace our whole selves, including a broad range of emotions, qualities, and experiences. By integrating our “shadow self”—those parts of us associated with anger, anxiety, guilt, and other “darker” emotions—and accepting ourselves fully, we can find deeper meaning, fulfillment, and well-being. A flourishing life isn’t free from negativity and discomfort but instead draws upon the full spectrum of the human experience.
